2010 NLWI Scholarship Winner Gregory Bailey

Gregory BaileyGregory is a resident of Gander and attended Gander Collegiate and is presently attending University of New Brunswick, Fredericton Campus working towards a Bachelor of Science, Engineering.

This year we were very pleased to receive fourteen applications for our scholarship; eight from females and six from males. The geographical areas covered were Labrador, Port au Port, Central, Conception Bay North, Marystown, Southern Shore, and St. John’s and surrounding areas.

All 14 applicants were excellent but there was one exceptional. Most of his grades were in the high 90’s, except for four, and they were 100%, earning him a final grade of 97%. His reference was glowing and the list of accomplishments and awards earned academically, through sports, leadership roles or as a result of volunteer and extra curricular activities , were all commendable but too numerous to comment on each one individually.

In May 2010 he received 1st place in Canada, for the Begbie Canadian History Contest and was Provincial Gold Medalist for Sun Life Open Mathematics Contest, not once, but twice. He has played on numerous high school teams such as volleyball and basketball but has excelled in cross-country running and other activities. When participating in the Nfld. & Lab. Summer and Winter games and also in the Royal Canadian Legion Provincial Games he earned 2nd & 3rd place in relay, 3rd place in high jump and three track & field medals.

He has participated in school and community public speaking competitions, held leadership roles in Nfld. & Lab. Youth Parliament, served as President of the Student Council and was school representative at the Healthy Minds Healthy Bodies Conference.

Even though he has just finished High School he has an impressive resume of Volunteer experience including the Cancer Society Relay for Life as both a participant and a fundraiser, the tutoring of friends and fellow students and as a member of the Gander Community Youth Network, and these are just a few.

Our three member committee diligently reviewed all applications and was unanimous in its decision.
